Even in vacation time, we are always thinking in our readers, we produced the fifth bilingual edition of SELETIVA magazine, always with new and attractive themes, which are not confined to Portugal alone. SINTRA NATIONAL PALACE – TRAVEL THROUGH EIGHT CENTURIES OF HISTORY IN THE OLDEST PALACE IN PORTUGAL

In the heart of the village of Sintra, marking the landscape with the unmistakable silhouette of its two conical chimneys, stands the palace that is the only survivor of the medieval Portuguese palaces. Inside one can witness to some of the most important episodes in the history of Portugal, the National Palace of Sintra was inhabited for almost eight centuries by monarchs Portuguese and the court, who appreciated the abundance of game in the region and refugees during the outbreak of plague in the capital or during the summer months, due to the milder climate of the village. Over time, it has taken different forms and incorporating artistic trends of each era presenting today, several architectural styles in that emphasizes the gothic and Manueline elements, being strongly marked by the Mudejar style – a mix between Christian art and Muslim art – patent in the luxurious Hispanic-Moorish tiles…

 

 

THE CASTLE OF ÓBIDOS, IN A VILLAGE OF QUEENS

The Castelo de Óbidos reflects and transmits much of the aura that surrounds the village. Castle and village are particle of the same unit, in harmony with the territory where they are inserted. The rhythms and images that the castle establishes with the territory are different depending on the approach we give it. The north and west is imposing, on steep terrain facing the flatness of the Queen’s floodplain the bottom of the lagoon), and to the south it is harmonious and protective, in perfect communication with the urban village.
